LOWELL - Jack Kerouac's voice yesterday echoed once more
off the red brick mills that fascinated the author as a boy.
A replay of Kerouac's reading of the final paragraph of his
classic "On the Road" from a 1959 television show culminated the
dedication of a one-acre park commemorating the Lowell-born author
whose work chronicled and inspired the "beat generation."
The 90-minute ceremony -- attended by about 1,000 people,
including two of Kerouac's three wives and poets Allen Ginsberg and
Lawrence Ferlinghetti -- marked the official opening of the first
public memorial to Kerouac in Lowell. The event also sought to
settle past controversies over the project.
