JERUSALEM - Abba Eban, the urbane statesman who for 40
years has presented Israel's case eloquently to the world, is today
a stranger in his own land.
What had been an open secret in Israel for years became public
June 15. That was the night when Eban, 73, was dropped in a
particularly painful and humiliating manner from his centrist Labor
Party's list of candidates for Parliament.
Eban's failure to withstand the test of Labor's first internal
elections for its Knesset list made public what most Israelis had
known for years: The man who in the minds of millions of people in
the West epitomized Israel is regarded here, as one Israeli
columnist noted, "as a kind of foreign body."
