Article: CHALLENGE OF MOUNT GREYLOCK LOOMS FOR DUKAKIS

The Dukakis administration this week faces its toughest environmental decision in years over a plan to build a country club, conference center and condominiums on 1,000 acres at the foot of the state's highest precipice, Mount Greylock in Adams.

At first glance it seems Gov. Michael S. Dukakis cannot win no matter what he decides.

If he approves the project, environmentalists vow to wage a battle more bruising than one in 1985 over a shopping center that was proposed for Sweedens Swamp in Attleboro, and the Environmental Protection Agency has promised to intervene to protect endangered wetlands.

If Dukakis says no to the plan, Berkshire County economic planners will feel betrayed ...
