WASHINGTON - Jonas Savimbi, the anticommunist African
guerrilla commander, opened a new front last week in his struggle
against Angola's Marxist government, reaching out to black
Americans and liberals to reinforce imperiled conservative support
for continued US military assistance to his UNITA forces.
The charismatic and controversial commander, whose army
controls an estimated third of Angola's countryside, barnstormed
the American Deep South in an extraordinary effort to skirt
established pan-African leaders and appeal directly for
grass-roots support.
