FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. - Except for the pounding of surf and the cries of an odd seagull or two, the beach at Robert Moses State Park was deadly silent yesterday.

The popular swimming spot, frequented by as many as 25,000 people on a typical summer weekday afternoon, was closed yesterday after 60 items, including blood vials, syringes and potentially infectious hospital material washed ashore.

It was the second straight day the beach was made off limits to sunbathers. On Wednesday vials of blood, surgical masks, hospital scrub brushes, surgical gloves and syringes were discovered at Robert Moses Beach and several other Long Island beaches, prompting park and health officials to close ...
