The Eloquent Object
A traveling show of objects in craft media, at the Museum
of Fine Arts, through Aug. 28. Organized by the Philbrook
Museum of Art, Tulsa, Okla.
What an apt title "The Eloquent Object" is for an exhibition of
works belonging to a category that speaks with increasing force and
fluency: American craft. This is a necessary show, making a case
for erasing the already blurred distinction between craft and fine
art. Work in media traditionally associated with crafts -- clay,
metal, glass, wood, fiber -- has grown steadily in aesthetic
importance during the postwar period that is the focus of this
