Cameron Shaw understands the poetry of decay, which is a major
theme in the works in his solo show, "Gardening: Paintings, Boxes
and Sculpture by Cameron Shaw," at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln
through July 31. The "Gardening" reference is literal in one sense
-- a sculpture that huddles in a gallery corner is a pile of
ordinary dirt -- and figurative in others. The press release for
the show compares Shaw to a gardener because he gathers and
prepares his materials carefully, as a gardener does. But that
comparison seems strained, describing not only Shaw but virtually
every other artist as well. More to the point are Shaw's concern
