LYTHAM, England - Seve Ballesteros put up an early 67, then
let the howling winds sweep away the hopes of would-be challengers
yesterday in the first round of the 117th British Open.
"Terrific. A fantastic score," Jack Nicklaus said of
Ballesteros' 4-under-par effort in dreadful conditions at the Royal
Lytham and St. Annes GC.
"Incredible," said Nick Price.
"A great round," said defending champion Nick Faldo of
England.
"The best I can play," said Ballesteros.
Only a couple of long shots, Wayne Grady of Australia and
Brad Faxon of Barrington, R.I., could keep Ballesteros in sight.
Each had a 69.
"I'm thrilled to death," said Faxon, in his fifth year on the
