FALMOUTH, Maine - On a day when it poured, Bill Hadden
finally reigned.
The 30-year-old stockbrocker from North Haven, Conn., knocked
home a 15-foot birdie putt from a tricky uphill lie to defeat
Brockton's Steve Tasho on the second hole of sudden death and win
the New England Amateur yesterday on the 6,406-yard Portland CC
layout.
Hadden and Tasho were tied after 72 holes at 1-under-par 279.
Hadden held on to win, rolling in his putt after Tasho's 20-footer
broke wide just below the cup. It was Hadden's first N.E. Amateur
title after runner-up finishes in 1983 and '87.
"Finally," Hadden said, "I can go home from this tournament a
winner."
