While creating waves and curls, acid permanents can sometimes
cause a persistent rash, according to dermatologists Lynne H.
Morrison of Johns Hopkins Hospital and Frances J. Storrs of the
Oregon Health Sciences University.
The cause of the irritation is an agent called glyceryl
monothioglycoloate (GMTG), which makes hair proteins malleable and
easy to shape. According to the physicians, manufacturers estimate
about 25 percent of salon permanents involve GMTG-based solutions.
