Q: I enjoyed your August 8 article on controlling weight in
diabetes. Could you discuss blood sugar levels and guidelines for
controlling them in Type II diabetes? One of the tests my doctor
orders is a hemoglobin A-1c. What does this test tell?
A: About 90 percent of people with diabetes have Type II, also
known as non-insulin dependent diabetes. Unlike those with Type I
diabetes, people with Type II don't require insulin in order to
survive. For treatment, people with Type II may rely on diet and
exercise alone, or use pills and insulin injections, or both.
