SMITHFIELD, R.I. - When Steve Grogan reported to his first training camp in 1975, he remembered looking up to Julius Adams, then a fourth-year defensive lineman with the Patriots, and saying to himself, "Wow, this guy's an old player."

"It's funny," Grogan said yesterday, "but I know when some of the younger guys look at me, they must say, 'Geez, this guy's been around forever.' "

That first training camp was a far cry from this year's at Bryant College. But Grogan, the Patriots' 35-year-old veteran quarterback, remembered it as clearly as though it were yesterday.
