Seven weeks to play.
It's Aug. 16, and the Red Sox are three games out of first
place. Since the beginning of baseball time as we know it (1967),
this is the 11th time the Red Sox have been in first, or within
four games of first, on this date. Boston has finished on top in
three of these previous 10 "races."
On this date in 1967, Darrell Brandon pitched seven innings
of scoreless relief as the Red Sox beat Denny McLain and the
Detroit Tigers, 8-3, to stay three games out of first. George Scott
hit two homers, and Tony Conigliaro did not play because he had an
Army reserve meeting in Lynn (Conigliaro would be seriously beaned
