LONDON - Sir Frederick Ashton, whose versatility and flair
marked him as one of the world's greatest choreographers, has died
at the age of 83.
A pioneer of the English style of ballet, Mr. Ashton died
Thursday night in his house in Eye, northeast of London in Suffolk
County, said a spokeswoman for the Royal Opera House. No cause of
death was given.
Mr. Ashton worked with The Royal Ballet for more than three
decades and directed the company for seven years. He devised more
than 100 ballets, including the comedy "A Wedding Bouquet" and
"Ondine," a tale of a water nymph.
His best-known ballets also include "Romeo and Juliet,"
"Cinderella," "Marguerite and Armand" and "Daphnis and ...
