Boycott is a nasty word coined in nasty times. It is, in fact,
the family name of a man deemed to have been guilty of nastiness in
the extreme. Charles C. Boycott was a land agent in Ireland who
was ostracized for refusing to reduce rents in the late 19th
century. His name is now synonymous with any concerted effort to
shun a product, a business or an enterprise in order to force terms
or modify conduct.
Motor Voters is a consumer lobbying group based in McLean,
Va., that promotes safety and the use of seat belts, and agitates
for air bag installation. Motor Voters is mounting a boycott.
