NEW YORK - He has won the last three US Opens and has been
the top-ranked men's player in the world for almost three full
years. She has won the last two Opens and is trying to get her No.
1 ranking back.
But Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova seem more like
forgotten heroes. People aren't asking, "Will Lendl and Navratilova
add to their list of championships here?" Instead, the working
questions at Flushing Meadow are (1) Is Andre Agassi for real and
can he get by Jimmy Connors? (2) Can Mats Wilander overtake Lendl
in the rankings? And, of course, (3) Can Steffi Graf win the first
Grand Slam since 1970?
Lendl and Navratilova led a parade of top seeds -- with the
exception of No. 3 ...
