NEW YORK - Steffi Graf may have the Grand Slam, but Mats
Wilander has the US Open championship and two other titles in major
events this year, and that's grand, too.
Wilander put an exclamation point on the theme of the 1988
Open when he beat Ivan Lendl, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, for the
men's singles title in a match that ran well into last night.
The future is now.
Wilander, 24, will bump Lendl out of the No. 1 spot in the
world when the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings come
out this morning. It's a position Lendl has held since winning his
first of three straight Opens in September 1985.
