Mark Knopfler is taking a break from the limelight. After 10
years of arena glare, he has chosen to break up his supergroup Dire
Straits and move on to more personal projects. Now on a
labor-of-love tour playing backup guitar in Eric Clapton's band,
Knopfler will soon return home to London to make a solo album, look
for more soundtrack and production work, explore film direction --
and most importantly, spend time with his twin 10-month-old sons,
Benjamin and Joseph.
"I haven't been very public about it, have I?" he says about
the breakup of Dire Straits. "But there's lots and lots of other
things I want to do. Life is very short. I wish I had 72 hours in a
day, but I don't.
