Early yesterday morning, with the sun just creasing the blue
envelope of Dorchester Bay, I spotted Mike Dukakis coming out of
the John F. Kennedy Library. He had taken one of Jack's old suits
from an exhibit and had it tucked beneath his arm while one of his
key aides stood by, desperate to shorten the sleeves and cuffs so
they would fit the governor tonight during the debate being held in
a North Carolina city, Winston-Salem, that's given its name to
cigarettes.
Dukakis, even though he too often has the public appearance of
a bored waiter waiting to take a beverage order, will do very,
very, very well this evening because he is up against a guy who
more often than not sounds as if his ...
