Article: MAINE SENATOR BACKS DOWN ON ACID RAIN

WASHINGTON - Sen. George Mitchell, the Maine Democrat who has waged a seven-year fight for tough acid rain legislation, drew fire yesterday from environmentalists and some of his New England Republican colleagues for accepting a watered-down measure they said caved in to coal-state interests.

The complaints came as Mitchell indicated he would modify his legislation to satisfy the departing Senate majority leader, Robert Byrd of West Virginia. Byrd has described the bill as an effort to short-circuit stronger measures that may follow the presidential election.
