In 1963, the Ford Foundation waved a financial wand and a shower
of $7.75 million scattered over American dance. The New England
Civic Ballet's share was $144,000, and, in a
Cinderella-transformation, the regional troupe that E. Virginia
Williams had founded in 1958 instantly became Boston Ballet.
Twenty-five years later, impressive statistics attest to the
company's growth since the days when the season consisted of a
couple of repertory weekends plus a couple of "Nutcrackers." This
season, the company performs five programs, each for a week and a
half, plus 47 "Nutcrackers." The Ballet claims that "Nutcracker"
