A look back at a fading season brings up several images -- some
bests and some worsts -- both from the world of cruising and that
of racing.
Not that I have ever treated the two as mutually exclusive,
despite the purist notions that prevail among some racers.
I have been racing aboard PHRF boats that make chance
encounters with cruising boats on the same water, and have
witnessed reactions that do little to ennoble the sport of sailing.
The racing afterguard, despite attempts from the cruising boat out
in front -- which has no obligation to get out of the way -- to
move into clear water, would berate the cruiser for his very
existence.
