LONDON - Cynics have long joked that Britain joined the European
Economic Community not to advance unity in Europe, but to make sure
it never came about.
After Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's latest blunt
dismissal of the ideal of a United States of Europe, some are
saying the cynics were right.
But for all those denouncing the Conservative Thatcher as
insular and narrow-minded, others are welcoming her approach as a
much-needed cold shower on what they view as a fantasy.
