Article: 7 HUB DETECTIVES SENTENCED TO 2-5 YEARS IN EXTORTION CASE TERMS ARE LESS THAN SOUGHT; JUDGE CITES SERVICE RECORDS

A federal judge sentenced seven Boston police detectives convicted of racketeering and extortion to prison terms ranging from two to five years yesterday, saying "lower sentences would still send an adequate message."

Federal prosecutors had sought sentences of five to 10 years for the four former and three current detectives. But Judge A. David Mazzone told the crowded courtroom in US District Court yesterday morning that it was difficult "not to be impressed" by the detectives' service records and that the lesser sentences would still alert those "who would follow the example of these defendants."
