SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Hispanic voters could determine the
outcome of the hard-fought presidential race in this crucial,
vote-rich state, although they make up only about 13 percent of the
Texas electorate.
For Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, it will be critical to maintain
the traditional Democratic hold on the Hispanic vote; he needs 75
to 80 percent.
On the other hand, Vice President George Bush needs only to
chip away at that margin to dash Dukakis' hopes for Texas' 29
electoral votes.
"Bush has to get 30 percent of that vote or better to hurt
Dukakis. It probably will give him the state if it is a close
election," said Andrew Hernandez, president of the nonpartisan
