US obstetricians have a positive duty to encourage a woman
to attempt vaginal delivery of her infant even if she has had one
or more prior births by Caesarean section, according to a new
policy scheduled for release today by the American College of
Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The revised guidelines, which are being mailed to 27,000
obstetricians this month, represent the strongest effort yet to
erase the old "once a Caesarean, always a Caesarean" dictum that
may have led to about 264,000 unnecessary surgical births last
year.
Caesarean birth involves removal of the infant through an
