Though Maine is still widely regarded as an unspoiled
stretch of the New England coastline, Portland Harbor and Casco Bay
rank among the worst in the country for a variety of pollutants,
according to a Conservation Law Foundation study scheduled for
release today.
"It's very, very troubling," said Douglas Foy, who heads
the Boston-based group, which has brought lawsuits to speed the
cleanup of several Massachusetts estuaries, including Boston
Harbor. The pollution in Maine's most heavily developed bay is
"surprisingly worse than we had thought," he noted.
Although he said the problem is still "reversible" in Casco
Bay, he warned that corrective action must start immediately. ...
