Chicago saxophonist Ed Wilkerson Jr. may well be the most
substantive young bandleader and composer in jazz today.
He blends tradition and humor and innovation in highly
original, powerful mixes. He has a vision large enough to produce
an album such as the stunning, wildly ambitious, "Birth of a
Notion," (Sessoms Records 1985) which features his 25-piece
orchestra Shadow Vignettes and includes nods to Duke Ellington and
big band tradition as well as rap music.
Last year's striking "Eight Bold Souls," (Sessoms Records)
featuring his octet of the same name, confirmed his talents. The
music swings hard, sometimes recalling Ellington's "jungle music,"
sometimes suggesting in its fervor and ...
