Several dozen pocketbooks, watches and pairs of sunglasses
were seized from Washington street vendors yesterday in what U.S.
Customs Service officials said is an ongoing crackdown on
counterfeit goods.
Customs agents rushed from double-parked trucks on Connecticut
Avenue near K Street NW yesterday afternoon and grabbed goods they
said were being sold as designer items at unrealistically low
prices. Sales along the usually busy vendor row came to a halt as
agents put the items into boxes, inventoried them and gave two
vendors receipts.
Robert Mayer, a supervisor for the agents who seized the
suspected counterfeit items, said a lot of the merchandise clears
