Hockey today, it is said, is in a state of constant change.
Nonsense, says Gerry Cheevers. A man who used to watch it from
behind his famous stitch-marked mask (thank you, John Forristall)
and now looks at it from the television booth high above rinkside,
Cheevers said yesterday, "Basically it hasn't changed" in the 10
years since he stopped keeping the puck out of the Bruins' net.
"It's still the same game. The team that checks better will win.
That will never change."
Cheevers, now the analyst on Hartford Whalers telecasts, was
at the Garden Club along with a couple of handfuls of former Bruins
players, Hall of Famers, who were honored in a pregame ceremony
