NEW YORK - Tomorrow morning the auctioneer's hammer will
fall on 15 pieces of "Arts and Crafts" furniture by Gustav
Stickley, and the high bidders will go home secure in the knowledge
that Stickley not only designed these dark, massive and highly
moral things but furnished his own house with them 85 years ago.
The Stickley dining room in Syracuse, N.Y., included a 10-foot oak
sideboard that, judging by food stains on the top, saw a heap o'
hospitality.
Christie's, which is auctioning the Stickley furniture for
his grandson, expects the sideboard to fetch upwards of $70,000. A
set of eight oak and leather dining chairs might go for $30,000.
