The food should have been the center of attention. There were
crab legs and scallops, smoked salmon and spinach pate, tiny
potatoes topped with caviar and sour cream. Champagne to wash it
down, of course, and Chardonnay and Samuel Adams and seven
well-stocked bars.
But the free buffet, lavish though it was, isn't what lured
2,000 well-dressed people to State Street one evening last month.
What attracted them was a new temple of commerce, the most opulent
example yet of what development in Boston has wrought.
