Last summer, when the National Association of Black Journalists
met in St. Louis for its annual convention, the group decided to
honor one of its founding members, former ABC News anchor Max
Robinson. Robinson, who was gravely ill at the time, had been a
virtual recluse for the previous two years. That he accepted the
invitation quickly, and the award with grace and gratitude, was a
measure of his commitment to the hundreds of professional
colleagues who looked upon him as an inspiration and a role model.
Robinson, 49, died yesterday morning of complications due to
AIDS. In a life marked by notable achievement and considerable
