Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb military commander wanted by international war crimes prosecutors on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, resigned today, buckling to pressure from Bosnian Serb political leaders and Western powers, a Belgrade news agency reported.

However, Mladic's decision, reported by the Belgrade agency VIP, did not necessarily end a 19-day stand-off between the Bosnian Serb military and its political leadership over the future of the ruthless general and the leadership of the once-formidable Serb fighting machine.
