Traffic across the Tobin Bridge fell 8.7 percent with the start
of the Central Artery/North Area construction project, according to
a tally by the Massachusetts Port Authority, the operator of the
bridge.
The count found an average of 38,000 vehicles a day passed
through the southbound toll booths between July and November last
year, compared with an average of 42,000 a day during the same
five months of 1987.
Although detour ramps did not open until October, Massport
spokeswoman Joey Cuzzi said the comparison began in July because
that was when the authority started deck repairs, which also
impeded traffic.
With traffic down, so are bridge revenues, and what to do
about this loss ...
