The 36.6 percent increase in Boston's homicide rate in 1988 was substantially larger than the rate increases experienced in all but four other major US cities.

Among the country's 20 most populous cities, only Washington, San Diego, San Jose, Calif., and Houston experienced homicide rate increases larger than Boston's. Eight of the country's biggest cities -- including Los Angeles and Chicago -- had declining homicide rates.

Boston, the 19th most populous city, ranked 13th in 1988 for the rate of homicide, two places higher than its 1987 ranking, according to statistics obtained from municipal police departments by The Boston Globe.
