Claudio Arrau's status as a great figure of piano playing and of
musical performance has been recognized for more than half a
century; at 85 he is still playing demanding recital programs and
the most difficult concertos in a daunting schedule of performances
and recordings. The performances that did the most to establish
Arrau's reputation were 12 consecutive programs in Berlin in 1935
devoted to the complete keyboard music of Bach. Within a few
years, however, Arrau gave up performing Bach on the piano,
convinced by his own studies and the example of Wanda Landowska
