SEAM REAP, Cambodia - Dusk is coming to Angkor Wat. Thousands of
chattering parrots are flying home to roost in the tall gum trees,
and the last of the sun is catching the tops of the mysterious
stone towers that rise above the jungle. In the vast complex of
ruins, one of the architectural wonders of the world, it is the
temple of Angkor Wat that represents the cultural heritage of
Cambodia and the Khmer race.
Twenty years have passed since I last gazed on these ancient
monuments, some of them a thousand years old. For Cambodia, it has
been 20 years of war, invasion, slavery and death unparalleled in
