The face is old, wrinkled and very beautiful.
The milky gray eyes suggest mist, possibly imperfect vision.
In fact, a mist is deliberately drawn across the past. Suddenly, in
the midst of perfect recall, there's mystery. Precise details are
blunted. In a thick Viennese accent, Lilia Skala's voice wavers,
tears glisten and spill. Then a parchment hand slaps the table. In
another moment, fierce arrogance mocks the tears. "Ja, ja, ja! I
promise myself on the boat coming over not to look back, and I kept
it. Kept it! I kept it pretty well when alone with myself not to
