For its centennial in 1991, New York's fabled Carnegie Hall is
going all out. As part of the festivities, it will spend almost
$500,000 to commission new music for old friends to play during the
gala season of 1990-1991. Ten ensembles and performers have been
matched to 10 composers of their own choosing. Some commissions
will do double duty, also serving as anniversary music elsewhere.
The 107-year-old Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of
Carnegie's oldest friends. The first in a long line of visiting
orchestras, the BSO gave its initial Carnegie Hall concert in
November 1893 and has performed there almost every season since. So
