In the 19 years since declaring a commitment to drive the
British from Northern Ireland by using violence, the Provisional
Irish Republican Army has proved itself adept at killing members of
the security forces.
But the Provos, as the IRA is commonly known, also have
botched bombings and shootings, killing innocent civilians instead
of police or army targets.
The IRA insists it is an army that has a moral right to take
up arms and it frequently accuses the British of failing to
discipline security force members who kill or injure civilians.
