ASUNCION, Paraguay - The forces of Gen. Andres Rodriguez
yesterday consolidated power after a bloody coup and rounded up
dozens of backers of the man they ousted. Opposition groups rushed
to seize political opportunities.
Reports emerged that the new president was involved in drug
trafficking and corruption. He has never been indicted.
A diplomat estimated that up to 300 people died in the
overthrow, the highest estimate given.
The ousted president, Alfredo Stroessner, who held power 34
years, longer than any leader in the Western Hemisphere, was
believed to remain under house arrest awaiting a flight to exile.
Forces loyal to Rodriguez, who was sworn in Friday, detained
