The presence of the Schubert 9th on this week's programs of the
Boston Symphony affords an opportunity to praise a new recording on
a new label in which a new ensemble performs the work in a new and
interesting way. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is a
group of London's best free-lance early-instrument players, most of
them familiar from their participation in long-established
ensembles. What sets it apart is its decision to work not with the
star conductors of the early-music movement such as Hogwood,
Pinnock, Gardiner, etc. but rather with distinguished conductors
