Boston University celebrates its 150th birthday this year. One unusual aspect of the festivities was to join the Boston Symphony Orchestra in co-commissioning a new work by one of the university's most distinguished faculty members, composer Bernard Rands. Seiji Ozawa will conduct the premiere performances of ". . . body and shadow . . ." during this week's concerts.

Rands, who will turn 55 on March 2, has been a prominent figure on the international scene for nearly 30 years; he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984.
