Many African American leaders are feeling taken for granted
these days.
Although their community delivered overwhelming support for
President Clinton's reelection, there is a growing sense that
Clinton's move to the political center could spell trouble for their
agenda. There is concern that the president's Cabinet shuffle could
further reduce black representation at the highest levels of
government, which heightened yesterday when Deval L. Patrick
announced plans to leave the Justice Department's top civil rights
post. And some black leaders are worried about the possible spread
of the sort of anti-affirmative action initiative that passed easily
in California last week.
