JERUSALEM - Jubilant leaders of the nationalist Likud bloc
said yesterday that their party's dominance of nationwide municipal
elections demonstrates wide support for its platform among Israeli
voters.
"It is not exactly a referendum or a public opinion poll, but
there is no doubt yesterday's elections proved Likud is gaining
strength . . . naturally, the majority side with our national
views," Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir said on state-run Israeli
radio.
"We didn't expect such a great victory," said Moshe Arens, the
foreign minister. "Here's the proof that the Likud is the real
governing party and that it is deeply rooted in the people."
