President Clinton did not know that Democratic Party
fund-raiser John Huang went to Taiwan to seek political
contributions earlier this year and would have opposed such
activities even though the targets were "legally qualified donors,"
White House press secretary Michael McCurry said yesterday.
"It was being done abroad and the circumstances under which
the money is raised or donated leads to" the exact questions that
now are being reviewed by the Democratic National Committee, McCurry
said. Possible illegal campaign contributions handled by Huang
plunged the Democrats into a major controversy in the final weeks of
the presidential campaign.
