The Boston School Committee is bracing itself for a grueling
battle over the school budget, knowing anticipated city revenue
problems may force teacher layoffs and school closings.
At stake may also be the future of Superintendent Laval S.
Wilson, whose four-year contract expires in June. Several School
Committee members said the budget debate will be a last chance to
judge Wilson's work before they vote on his contract renewal.
"If he were to do the right thing, he might be saved," said
School Committee member Daniel Burke (Dorchester), one of a
majority of members who last month appeared to be against renewing
the contract.
