Article: TEAMSTERS AVERT TRIAL BY ACCEPTING REFORMS

The government's landmark court fight to take control of the nation's largest union, the Teamsters, was averted yesterday when union leaders agreed to a sweeping overhaul to settle accusations that they have allowed organized crime to infiltrate and dominate the organization.

The tentative civil settlement, which leaves the longtime Boston Teamster leader William J. McCarthy as president of the international union, was approved by US Attorney General Dick Thornburgh late yesterday in Washington

It calls for a court-appointed panel of three to oversee the Teamsters' internal affairs for the next three years, and for direct membership elections of top officers in 1991.
