JAY, Vt. - What does it take for a mountain to qualify as truly
extraordinary?
You would have to see the boyish excitement in the eye of a
Peter Weber as he talks about getting a World Cup event to his
Sugarloaf ski area.
Or know what Waterville's Tom Corcoran has committed his area
to in opening the competitive season next November with a World Cup
slalom.
Or perhaps understand how much money -- about $10 million --
Vail's George Gillete spent in presenting the World Alpine
Championships last month, much of which Vail will never see again,
at least in the short term.
You also would have to understand how easy it would be for the
Jay Peak ski area in northern Vermont to do away ...
